A Movement for Regulation and Belonging
At Esperanza, we believe that emotional well-being is the foundation for every child’s success; socially, academically, and personally. We provide specialised therapy inspired by The Zones of Regulation®, a globally embraced framework created by occupational therapist Leah Kuypers.
For families living in the vibrant, high-energy hubs of Downtown Dubai, the busy streets of Al Karama, or the growing communities of Al Jaddaf, navigating daily life requires significant emotional flexibility. Our mission is to empower children with the tools to understand their internal world, fostering resilience in the heart of our city.
Our Philosophy: Regulation is a Skill for Everyone
We view regulation not as a fixed trait that a child is born with, but as a learnable, shareable skill. Research in neuroscience and developmental psychology shows that our brains are plastic, they can learn new ways to respond to stress and excitement.
Our therapy focuses on:
- Empathy and Structure: Teaching children to identify their feelings without judgment.
- The Power of Co-Regulation: We believe that for a child to learn to self-regulate, they first need to be co-regulated by a supportive adult. We partner with parents across Trade Centre and Jaddaf to ensure you feel equipped to be that calm “anchor” for your child.
- Inclusion and Accessibility: Whether your child is neurodivergent or simply needs support with big emotions, our tools meet them exactly where they are.
The Science: Why the "Zones" Work
Feelings are complicated. They come in different sizes, intensities, and levels of energy that are unique within our brains and bodies. To make them easier to talk about, the framework; grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Theory, organises these states into four colour-coded Zones.
1. The Blue Zone: The Rest Area
- The State: Sad, tired, bored, or moving slowly.
- The Science: This is a state of low alertness. The body is “under-activated.”
- Dubai Context: Think of the quiet moments during a long school commute from Jaddaf or a slow afternoon at home.
2. The Green Zone: The “Good to Go” Zone
- The State: Calm, happy, focused, and ready to learn.
- The Science: This is the ideal state for social interaction and academic tasks. The prefrontal cortex is fully engaged.
- Dubai Context: This is your child feeling confident while playing with friends at Zabeel Park or sitting in class in Downtown.
3. The Yellow Zone: The “Slow Down” Zone
- The State: Frustrated, anxious, silly, or wiggly.
- The Science: A state of heightened alertness. The “engine” is starting to speed up, and self-control is becoming more difficult.
- Dubai Context: Feeling overwhelmed by the bright lights and sensory input of the Karama markets or the bustling crowds at Dubai Mall.
4. The Red Zone: The “Stop” Zone
- The State: Angry, terrified, overjoyed, or out of control.
- The Science: This is a state of extremely high alertness. When in the Red Zone, the “emotional brain” (amygdala) takes over, making it very hard to think clearly.
- Dubai Context: A complete meltdown when it is time to leave a fun play area or when a routine unexpectedly changes.
How Esperanza Implements Regulation Therapy
Our therapy is evidence-informed and tailored to the unique lifestyle of Dubai families. We don’t just teach the “Zones” in isolation; we bridge the gap between brain science and daily life.
1. Identifying Triggers & Sensory Needs
Every child has different triggers. For some, the noise of Trade Centre traffic is a Yellow Zone trigger; for others, it might be the transition from school to home. We help children recognize these early warning signs in their bodies.
2. Building a “Regulation Toolbox”
We help children explore practical strategies to move between Zones:
- Calming Techniques: Deep breathing or “heavy work” for Red/Yellow Zones.
- Alerting Techniques: Movement or sensory input for the Blue Zone.
- Thinking Strategies: Using “Social Thinking” to understand how their Zone affects the people around them.
3. Bridging Evidence and Everyday Life
Research shows that the most successful outcomes happen when the environment supports the child. Our therapists provide:
- Home Integration: We help you set up a “Calm Down Corner” in your Jaddaf
- School Support: We provide language you can share with teachers in Downtown or Karama
- Community Coaching: Strategies for staying “Green” during family outings and community events.
The Benefits: Growing Meaningfully
Children who engage in therapy inspired by the Zones often experience:
- Enhanced Self-Awareness: The ability to say, “I’m in the Yellow Zone, I need a break.”
- Increased Resilience: Recovering more quickly from setbacks.
- Stronger Connection: Improved relationships with parents, siblings, and peers through the power of a shared language.
At Esperanza, we are proud to be part of a community helping people grow emotionally, socially, and meaningfully. We believe that regulation is essential for leading a healthy and meaningful life.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly are the "Zones," and why does my child need them?
The Zones of Regulation® is a framework that helps children categorise all their feelings and levels of alertness into four easy-to-understand colours. In a busy city like Dubai, children are constantly transitioning—from quiet apartments in Al Jaddaf to the sensory-filled malls in Downtown.
This system gives them a “common language” to describe their internal state. Instead of just saying “I’m upset,” they can say, “I’m in the Yellow Zone.” This clarity allows them to choose the right tool to get back to the Green Zone (the state where they feel calm and ready to learn).
Is being in the "Red Zone" bad? Should my child be punished?
Absolutely not. One of the core pillars of the research by Leah Kuypers is that there are no “bad” zones. Everyone experiences all the zones at different times.
- It is okay to be in the Blue Zone when you are tired after a long day at school.
- It is natural to be in the Yellow Zone if you are excited about a weekend trip to Zabeel Park.
- The Red Zone is a state of intense emotion (like anger or extreme joy).
Our therapy focuses on regulation, not punishment. We teach children that while the feeling is valid, we might need a “tool” to stay safe and in control of our actions.
Can my child be in more than one zone at the same time?
Yes! Human emotions are complex. A child might feel tired (Blue Zone) because they stayed up late, but also anxious (Yellow Zone) about a big presentation at their school near Trade Centre. Recognising that they are in two zones at once is actually a sign of very advanced emotional awareness!
Why does my child seem "Green" at school but "Red" the moment we get home to Karama?
This is a very common experience called “after-school restraint collapse.” Children often work incredibly hard to “keep it together” and follow social expectations during the school day. When they return to the safety of their home and parents, they finally feel secure enough to let those big emotions out. We use the Zones to help ease this transition, providing “Blue Zone” rest or “Yellow Zone” sensory play the moment they step through the door.
What are these "Tools" you keep mentioning?
A “Tool” is any strategy that helps a child change or maintain their Zone. Because every child’s sensory needs are different, their “Toolbox” is unique. Local examples include:
- Blue Zone Tool: A brisk walk near the Jaddaf Waterfront to wake up the body.
- Green Zone Tool: Deep “belly breathing” while waiting in Downtown traffic to stay calm.
- Yellow Zone Tool: Using a “fidget” or taking a quiet break in a “calm-down corner” at home.
- Red Zone Tool: “Heavy work” (like pushing against a wall) or finding a safe, quiet space to decompress.
How can I support this at home?
The most powerful thing a parent can do is Co-Regulation.
- Model the language: “I’m stuck in traffic near the Trade Centre and I’m starting to feel Yellow. I’m going to take three deep breaths to stay Green.”
- Validation: If your child is upset, instead of saying “stop crying,” try saying, “I can see you are in the Red Zone. I am here to help you get back to Green when you are ready.”
Does Esperanza offer "official" Zones training?
We provide therapy inspired by the Zones of Regulation®. This means we take the evidence-based principles of the framework and integrate them into our professional clinical practice. We tailor the curriculum to meet the specific neurobiological and developmental needs of each child we see in our Dubai clinic.
How does it help children with Autism or ADHD?
Children with Autism or ADHD often find it challenging to recognize their emotions or body signals. This framework provides simple tools to understand feelings, practice self-control, and develop coping strategies that work at home, school, and in the community.
