What is Oral Motor Therapy?

At Esperanza, we define Oral Motor Therapy (OMT) as the process of facilitating improved jaw, lip, and tongue function. It is a specialised clinical approach used across various treatments, including Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Feeding Therapy.

Our focus, including the Beckman Oral Motor Program, is to help children and adults develop the physical foundation needed for clear communication and safe eating.

Why are Speech Movements Important?

Communication is a physical act. If you try to count from one to ten without moving your mouth, you will find that you remain silent. Because no one can speak without moving, OMT is essential for developing the correct physical movements required for speech.

In our Karama centre, we use these techniques to help children with Autism, ADHD, or Down Syndrome who may struggle with the “mechanics” of talking. By strengthening the orofacial muscles, we turn silence or frustration into clear, confident voices.

What are Proper Speech Movements?

To speak correctly, the mouth must move in very specific ways. For example:

  • When you say “Mmmm,” your lips must touch.
  • When you say “Nnnn,” your lips stay apart while your tongue lifts to the roof of your mouth.

Every sound in the English language requires a specific position of the jaw, lips, and tongue.

  • The Jaw: Needs to move up, down, left, right, and even rotate.
  • The Lips: Must be able to pucker, round, and retract.
  • The Tongue: Needs the strength to lift its tip, sides, and back independently.

Mature speech requires all these parts to work both independently and in coordination. Our Beckman Oral Motor Program in Dubai focuses on facilitating these precise movements so that speech becomes natural and effortless.

Symptoms of Weak Oral Motor Skills

Recognising these signs early can make a significant difference. Parents in Bur Dubai and Jumeirah often notice these common indicators:

  • Speech Difficulties: Slurred speech, inconsistent sounds, or a child who seems to “struggle” to get words out.
  • Feeding Problems: A strong preference for soft foods, difficulty chewing, or frequent coughing during mealtimes. This is often linked to Food Sensitivities in Children with Autism.
  • Excessive Drooling: Drooling beyond the typical toddler years often indicates that the lips and jaw need more strength to stay closed.
  • Poor Lip Closure: Difficulty using a straw, blowing bubbles, or keeping food inside the mouth while chewing.

Support for Children

We often support children who experience:

  • Feeding challenges: Difficulty chewing, “picky eating” related to textures, or trouble transitioning to solids.
  • Speech clarity concerns: Difficulty making specific sounds, making it hard for teachers or peers to understand them.
  • Muscle tone differences: Children who may have low muscle tone in their face, leading to frequent dribbling.
  • Developmental delays: Supporting those who need a little extra help finding the physical power behind their voice.

Support for Adults

We work with individuals who may have:

  • Stuttering or speech blocks: While we also offer Stuttering Therapy, oral motor work helps adults manage the physical tension and “locked” jaw often associated with stuttering.
  • Workplace communication: Helping professionals improve speech clarity and projection to feel more empowered in meetings.
  • Recovery and rehabilitation: Supporting adults who need to regain oral muscle strength or range of motion due to neurological conditions or post-surgical needs.

Expected Outcomes for Oral Motor Therapy

Every journey is unique, and we celebrate every “small win” along the way. Whether your child is receiving support for Autism, managing the high energy of ADHD, or simply needing a boost in physical coordination, our Oral Motor Therapy in Dubai provides the foundation for success.

By focusing on the physical strength of the mouth and jaw, you can look forward to:

  • Improved Feeding & Swallowing: Greater ease with different food textures and more efficient chewing. This is particularly helpful for children with sensory sensitivities often associated with Autism, making family mealtimes in Karama much calmer.
  • Clearer Communication: A noticeable improvement in speech clarity. By strengthening the muscles used for sound production, your child’s Speech Therapy goals become easier to reach as they find the physical power behind their voice.
  • Enhanced Sensory Regulation: For children with ADHD, oral motor input can be very grounding. This works hand-in-hand with Occupational Therapy to help children stay focused and regulated throughout their school day.
  • Increased Confidence: As communication becomes easier, children feel more empowered to interact with peers. This boost in confidence is a key outcome for our neurodiverse superstars in Al Mankhool and Oud Metha.
  • Greater Participation: Reducing the physical barriers to eating and speaking allows for more joyful participation at home, in the classroom, and within the wider Dubai community.

Techniques to Strengthen Oral Motor Skills

1. Targeted Exercises
  • Lip Stretches & Purses: We encourage “big smiles” followed by tight puckers to improve lip closure and strength.
  • Tongue “Push-Ups”: Pressing the tongue against the roof of the mouth helps build the elevation needed for sounds like “N” and “L.”
  • Chewing Practice: Using varied food textures or Chewy Tubes to build jaw stability and chewing endurance.
2. Fun, Play-Based Activities
  • Blowing Bubbles: A favorite in our Karama clinic, this strengthens breath control and lip rounding.
  • Straw Challenges: Blowing through a straw to move cotton balls or create bubbles in water helps with “mobilization” and focus especially helpful for children with ADHD.
3. Professional Guidance

While at-home practice is wonderful, professional Speech Therapy ensures that exercises are safe and correctly tailored to your child’s specific muscle contours. We provide the expert guidance needed to see real, measurable progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oral Motor Therapy, specifically the Beckman Oral Motor Program, focuses on the physical foundation of the mouth. It uses gentle stretches and pressure to improve the range of motion and strength of the jaw, lips, and tongue. This helps children with Autism or ADHD who may have sensory sensitivities or low muscle tone, making it easier for them to chew safely and produce speech sounds more clearly.

Every session at Esperanza is led by a highly experienced, DHA-licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) with specialized training in the Beckman Oral Motor Program UAE. Our therapists bring at least 8 plus years of experience to ensure your child receives expert care.

While both fall under the umbrella of Speech Therapy, Oral Motor Therapy focuses specifically on the mechanical side the muscles. Traditional therapy often focuses on sounds and language. For children with Autism or physical delays, we use the Beckman approach to “prepare” the muscles so that traditional speech exercises become more effective.

Early intervention is vital. We can begin oral motor assessments for infants with feeding difficulties and toddlers as young as 18 months. However, it is also highly effective for older children and adults who struggle with speech clarity or jaw tension.

For the best outcomes in muscle memory and strength, we generally recommend 2 to 3 sessions per week. Consistency is essential for ensuring these new motor patterns become natural habits at home in Jumeirah or at school in Al Mankhool.

Yes! We believe in a family-centred approach. We encourage parents from nearby Oud Metha and Bur Dubai to observe sessions. Our therapists will teach you simple, safe techniques you can use at home to support your child’s progress during daily mealtimes.

Often, what looks like picky eating is actually a physical struggle with certain textures. By improving jaw strength and tongue lateralization (moving food from side to side), children with Autism or sensory needs feel more capable and less anxious about trying new foods.

We work with most major insurance providers in the UAE (such as Bupa, Sukoon, and Cigna) on a “Pay and Claim” basis. Our team provides all necessary DHA-stamped medical reports and invoices to help you navigate the reimbursement process smoothly.

Booking is simple, just WhatsApp us at +971 55 524 1094. We are located in the Zomorrodah Building, Karama, easily accessible from Bur Dubai, Jumeirah, and Downtown Dubai.

Yes! We are located on Zabeel Road, very close to the Karama Post Office and Dubai Central Laboratory. We offer ample RTA Parking (Zones A & C) right at our doorstep, so you don’t have to worry about the “Dubai parking struggle” before your appointment.
