What is PROMPT Therapy?

PROMPT stands for Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets. It is a gentle, hands-on tactile-kinesthetic approach used by our specialists at Esperanza. Unlike traditional speech therapy where a child just listens and repeats, our DHA certified speech therapists use soft touch cues on the child’s “articulators” the jaw, lips, and tongue.

These precise “prompts” manually guide your child through a targeted word or phrase. This technique helps develop proper motor control and correct oral muscular movements while eliminating unnecessary movements, such as jaw sliding. By providing this physical support, we turn child therapy into a positive, successful experience that builds real communication confidence.

Who Does PROMPT Therapy Support?

At Esperanza, we see families from all over the UAE, including Jumeirah, Al Mankhool, and Downtown Dubai, who are seeking specialized paediatric therapy. A PROMPT evaluation is often recommended for children with speech that is difficult for others to understand or those suspected of having motor speech disorders.

This program supports children with:

  • Childhood Apraxia of Speech: A key area where we provide specialized speech therapy for Childhood Apraxia of Speech in Dubai.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (Autism): Helping children with Autism develop the physical motor skills needed for functional speech.
  • ADHD: Supporting children with ADHD who may struggle with the focus or coordination required for complex speech sounds.
  • Developmental Delays: For any toddler who is hitting speech milestones a little later than expected.

Whether your child is just starting to talk or is a school-aged child struggling with clarity, our DHA licensed team provides a holistic approach that often works alongside occupational therapy to support your child’s total development.

How the PROMPT Therapy Program Works

At Esperanza, we deliver PROMPT therapy sessions in Dubai within a warm, play-based, and highly structured environment. We understand that child therapy works best when it feels like fun.

The Evaluation

This is more than just a basic check-up. Our specialists perform a comprehensive assessment of articulation, as well as expressive and receptive language skills. We look closely at:

  • Oral structure and spontaneous speech production.
  • The way the jaw, lips, and tongue move during speech.
  • How well your child can imitate sounds when given tactile-kinesthetic support.

The Therapy Journey

  • Individualised Care Plans: Based on the evaluation, we create goals that can be integrated with other services like occupational therapy or behavior therapy if needed.
  • Expert Therapists: Your child is supported by DHA certified professionals with at least 8 plus years of experience.
  • Functional Routines: We use play and daily routines to improve turn-taking and the social use of language.
  • Parent Partnership: We collaborate with you to ensure the techniques used in our Karama centre can be mirrored at home during daily life.

Expected Outcomes

Every child is unique and progresses at their own pace, but the goal of PROMPT therapy for speech delay is to build functional communication and independence. Over time, parents can expect:

  • Improved Motor Control: Better coordination of the mouth and jaw for clearer speech.
  • Greater Confidence: As speech becomes easier, children are more likely to initiate conversation with peers.
  • Increased Participation: Better engagement at home, in schools across Oud Metha, and in the wider community.
  • Holistic Growth: Improvements in speech often lead to better social interaction, especially for children managing Autism or ADHD.

Take the First Step to help a child with apraxia or other motor speech disorders

If you have a child with motor-speech difficulties, you may already know that conventional articulation speech therapy can be frustrating and may not always produce the best results for your child. The PROMPT method provides children with mass practice and repeated tactile, aural, and visual cues. They will see how a sound is made, hear what it should sound like, and feel exactly how to produce it. If you think your child may benefit from a PROMPT-based treatment approach, please do not hesitate to reach out to us

Frequently Asked Questions

PROMPT stands for Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets. While traditional speech therapy often focuses on auditory (listening) and visual (watching) cues, PROMPT is “tactile-kinesthetic.” This means our DHA certified speech therapists use gentle touch on your child’s jaw, lips, and tongue to manually guide them. It helps a toddler or child literally feel how to form words, which is often the “missing piece” for those struggling with speech.

Yes, absolutely. Many children with Autism or ADHD experience challenges with motor planning the ability to tell their muscles how to move in the right order. At Esperanza, we integrate PROMPT into a holistic child therapy plan. By simplifying the physical act of speaking, we reduce the “communication frustration” often seen in children with Autism, helping them engage more happily with their families and peers in Dubai.

Not at all. The “prompts” are very gentle, supportive touches. Our therapists, who have 8 plus years of experience, are experts at building trust first. We deliver PROMPT through play-based activities, so your child often doesn’t even realise they are “working.” It feels like a supportive hand helping them find their voice.

A PROMPT evaluation is highly recommended if your child:

  • Is difficult for people outside the family to understand.
  • Shows signs of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (struggling to coordinate mouth movements).
  • Has a limited range of sounds or “muddled” speech.
  • Experiences “jaw sliding” or difficulty rounding their lips when talking. Whether you are in Jumeirah or Al Mankhool, if you are concerned about your child’s physical ability to speak, a specialized assessment is the best first step.

Yes, Esperanza is a multi-disciplinary centre. Many of our families combine PROMPT-based speech therapy with occupational therapy and behavior therapy to support their child’s sensory and motor development. This collaborative approach ensures your child is supported from every angle, right here in our Karama facility.
