Frequently Asked Questions
Are there session limits on my insurance policy?
Most plans apply either a monetary cap (e.g. AED 5,000/year) or a session cap (e.g. 20 sessions/year) on rehabilitation services. Daman’s Enhanced plan typically requires pre-authorisation in blocks of 10–12 sessions. We help you track and plan around your annual allowance.
Does Daman or Thiqa cover speech therapy?
Daman Enhanced plans and Thiqa generally offer strong coverage for speech and occupational therapy when supported by a clear diagnosis and specialist referral. Thiqa is particularly comprehensive for UAE nationals. Contact us with your policy number and we’ll advise you within minutes.
Is autism therapy covered by insurance in the UAE?
Coverage has improved significantly but remains plan-specific. Standard and basic-tier plans often exclude developmental disorders, while premium corporate plans increasingly include dedicated benefits for ASD, including speech therapy and OT components. Always check your plan for a specific ‘Behavioural Therapy’ or ‘Neurodevelopmental Support’ sub-limit.
What documentation does Esperanza provide for claims?
| Document | Purpose |
| Valid GP / Specialist Referral Letter | Establishes medical necessity (usually valid 90 days) |
| Initial Assessment Report | Clinical baseline; required for most claims |
| Treatment Plan | Outlines goals, session frequency, expected duration |
| DHA-Stamped Insurance Claim Form | Standardised form accepted by all UAE insurers |
| Official Invoices | Itemised receipts for each session |
| Progress / Updated Reports (ongoing) | For continued claims after initial authorisation |
All documentation is provided as standard — not charged as an extra.
What if my insurance doesn’t cover therapy?
We never want cost to delay a child’s progress. At Esperanza we offer flexible payment arrangements, adjusted session frequency to suit your budget, and structured programmes that can reduce per-session cost. Our team will work with you to find a path forward.
Key Terms Every Dubai Parent Should Know
Before navigating costs and insurance, it helps to speak the language. Here are the terms you will encounter most — clearly defined and ready to share.
Speech & Language Therapy (SLT)
“A clinical service delivered by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) that assesses, diagnoses, and treats disorders of communication including speech sounds, language comprehension, expressive language, fluency, voice, and social communication. In Dubai, all practising SLPs must hold a current DHA (Dubai Health Authority) licence.”
Occupational Therapy (OT)
“A health profession focused on enabling people to participate in the activities (‘occupations’) of everyday life. For children, this includes fine motor skills, sensory processing, self-care, play, and school readiness. Occupational therapists at DHA-licensed clinics in Dubai work alongside speech therapists to support holistic child development.”
Pay & Claim (Reimbursement Model)
“A billing arrangement in which a patient pays the clinic directly at the time of treatment, then submits a formal claim to their insurance provider to recover all or part of the cost. Most specialist therapy centres in Dubai, including Esperanza, operate on this basis. The clinic provides DHA-stamped documentation; the family submits the claim via their insurer’s app or portal.”
Pre-Authorisation (Pre-Auth)
“Formal approval from your insurance provider, obtained before therapy begins, confirming that the planned treatment will be covered under your policy. Required by most UAE insurers for ongoing therapy. Typically triggered by a GP or specialist referral and a completed assessment report. Without pre-auth, reimbursement may be refused.”
DHA Licence (Dubai Health Authority Licence)
“The mandatory regulatory credential issued by the Dubai Health Authority to all healthcare practitioners and facilities operating in Dubai. A DHA licence is a baseline requirement for insurance reimbursement in the UAE. It confirms the therapist has been trained, vetted, and approved to practise. Always verify this before booking.”
Medical Necessity
“The clinical standard insurers use to determine whether a requested treatment is appropriate, necessary, and evidence-based for the patient’s diagnosed condition. Insurance claims for speech or occupational therapy are almost always assessed against this criterion. A GP or specialist referral letter, combined with a formal assessment report, establishes medical necessity in writing.”
Allied Health Benefits
“A category within health insurance policies covering services delivered by licensed health professionals other than doctors and nurses — including speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and dietitians. When reviewing your insurance Table of Benefits, look for this term to identify whether speech or OT is covered.”
Early Intervention
“Therapy and developmental support provided to children under the age of five who show signs of delay or disorder in communication, motor, cognitive, or social domains. Early intervention is widely recognised by UAE insurers as medically necessary because research consistently shows that earlier treatment produces significantly better outcomes — and lower long-term costs.”
Table of Benefits (TOB)
“The document provided by your insurer — often attached to your policy or available via HR — that lists exactly what services are covered, at what rates, and with what restrictions. Before your child’s first therapy session, request the TOB from your HR department or insurer and look for ‘Rehabilitation’, ‘Allied Health’, ‘Speech Therapy’, or ‘Occupational Therapy’ entries.”
Rehabilitation Benefit
“A policy provision covering therapeutic treatment aimed at restoring or improving a person’s functional abilities following illness, injury, or a diagnosed developmental condition. In the UAE, speech therapy and occupational therapy for children are most commonly covered under this benefit category — particularly when linked to a clinical diagnosis such as autism, cerebral palsy, or a language disorder.”
“The DHA licence and DHA licensed therapist is not a quality badge, it is the key that unlocks your insurance claim.” — Esperanza Clinical Team, Al Karama
“Early intervention isn’t just better for your child, it’s better for your budget. The earlier therapy begins, the fewer sessions are typically needed.”
Expanded FAQ: Insurance & Costs for Speech Therapy in Dubai
These are the questions Esperanza families ask most. Answers are written to be shared with HR departments, insurance advisers, and other parents who are just starting out.
Q: What is the difference between a monetary cap and a session cap on insurance?
A monetary cap limits the total amount your insurer will reimburse per year for example, AED 5,000 for all rehabilitation services combined. A session cap limits the number of individual sessions for example, 20 sessions per year. Some policies apply both simultaneously.
Important: these limits usually apply across all allied health services, not just speech therapy. If your child also needs occupational therapy, both therapies draw from the same allowance. Plan accordingly, and ask the clinic to help you prioritise if your annual limit is modest.
Q: Can I use insurance for both speech therapy and occupational therapy at the same time?
Yes, but both services draw from the same rehabilitation or allied health annual limit on most policies. If your child’s plan has, say, AED 8,000 per year for rehabilitation, every speech therapy and OT session is billed against that same pool.
At Esperanza, our team helps families map their insurance allowance against their child’s clinical priorities so you get the most out of every dirham of coverage.
Q: My employer’s insurance only covers ‘medically necessary’ therapy. Does speech therapy qualify?
In almost all clinical cases, yes. Speech and language therapy is classified as a healthcare service, not an educational one, when it addresses a diagnosed condition — such as a speech sound disorder, language delay, autism spectrum disorder, or stuttering. The critical step is ensuring your GP or paediatrician documents the diagnosis clearly in the referral letter.
Esperanza’s assessment reports are written specifically to meet the medical necessity standard insurers require. We include diagnostic codes, clinical findings, and a clearly stated rationale for treatment.
Q: What happens if my insurance claim is rejected?
A rejection is not always final. Common reasons for rejection include: missing or expired referral letters, lack of pre-authorisation, incomplete documentation, or a claim submitted past the deadline. Most insurers allow an appeal within 30–60 days.
At Esperanza, our team reviews rejected claims with families and, where possible, provides additional clinical evidence or corrected documentation to support a re-submission. We have successfully helped families reverse rejected claims on multiple occasions.
Q: Is there a waiting period before insurance covers therapy?
Some UAE health insurance policies apply a waiting period, typically 30 to 90 days from the policy start date, before rehabilitation or allied health benefits become active. This is particularly common when policies are renewed or when a family switches insurers.
Always check the ‘Waiting Periods’ section of your policy document or ask HR before your child’s first session. If a waiting period applies, we can sometimes structure the assessment phase to fall within that window so therapy is ready to begin the moment cover activates.
Q: Does the Dubai Essential Benefits Plan (EBP) cover speech therapy?
The Essential Benefits Plan, the minimum mandatory cover required by Dubai law for some employees, provides very limited coverage for outpatient rehabilitation. Speech therapy is generally not covered under basic EBP plans, though emergency and basic medical services are included.
If your family is on an EBP plan, speak to our team about self-pay options and flexible scheduling. We work with families across all income levels and will find a workable path forward.
Q: How long does it take to get reimbursed after submitting a claim?
Processing times vary by insurer. Most UAE providers process straightforward reimbursement claims within 15–30 working days of receiving complete documentation. Complex claims or those requiring additional clinical review can take longer.
To avoid delays: submit promptly after each session, ensure all documents are signed and DHA-stamped, and keep copies of everything you submit. Esperanza provides all documentation immediately after each session, you should never have to chase us for paperwork.

Because we serve families from Al Karama to Downtown Dubai, the questions we receive often reflect very specific local situations. Here are the most common ones, by area.

Esperanza is your closest specialist speech and OT clinic we’re on Umm Hurair Road, a short walk from Karama Metro Station. We typically offer initial slots within a few working days. For urgent cases, call +971 55 524 1094 directly and we will do our best to accommodate you the same week.
Q: Can Esperanza liaise with our child’s school in Bur Dubai about therapy progress?
Yes. With parental consent, we regularly communicate with schools including many in the Bur Dubai, Karama, and Oud Metha areas providing progress summaries and recommendations for classroom support. Strong school–clinic communication accelerates a child’s development significantly.
Oud Metha
Q: Our paediatrician at Rashid Hospital referred us for speech therapy. What do we do next?
A Rashid Hospital referral is an excellent starting point it establishes the medical necessity your insurer will need. Bring the referral letter (or a copy) to your first appointment at Esperanza. Our team will review it, confirm it meets your insurer’s requirements, and advise if any additional documentation is needed before we begin.

Q: Is there parking near the clinic for Oud Metha families?
Yes. The Zomorrodah Building (our address) has access to paid street parking and nearby public car parks on Umm Hurair Road. The clinic is also accessible from Oud Metha Metro Station, which is a short walk away.
Trade Centre, DIFC & Sheikh Zayed Road
Q: My employer provides Bupa or Cigna through a DIFC company. How do I check if speech therapy is covered?
Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask specifically: ‘Does my plan include outpatient speech therapy or occupational therapy under rehabilitation or allied health benefits?’ Have your plan number ready.
Alternatively, call Esperanza on +971 55 524 1094 we have experience with Bupa and Cigna corporate plans and can often advise on likely coverage based on your plan tier before you even make the call yourself.
Q: We’ve just relocated to Dubai on a corporate package. What should we sort out before our child’s first session?
Three things: (1) Request your Table of Benefits from HR or your insurer to confirm therapy is covered. (2) Register with a GP clinic in Dubai so you can get a local referral letter if needed. (3) Book a free First Steps Consultation at Esperanza we will check your insurance eligibility during the session and give you a clear picture of costs before any treatment begins.
Al Jaddaf
Q: We’re new to Al Jaddaf and our son has just been diagnosed with ASD. Where do we start?
Start with our Free First Steps Consultation. It costs nothing and gives you a professional view of your son’s communication needs, a clear explanation of what therapy is likely to involve, and an honest assessment of your insurance coverage for ASD-related therapy.
Al Jaddaf to Esperanza is typically a 10–12 minute drive via the Al Jaddaf bridge well worth the journey for the expertise available.

Q: My daughter has a speech delay but hasn’t been formally diagnosed with anything. Can we still claim insurance?
Yes — many insurance plans cover assessment and early intervention therapy for speech delay even before a formal diagnosis is confirmed, provided a GP has documented the developmental concern and referred the child for assessment. The assessment itself often leads to a clinical diagnosis, which then supports ongoing therapy claims.
Downtown Dubai
Q: We’re on a NOW Health or Allianz expat plan. Are sessions at Esperanza claimable?
Esperanza is a DHA-licensed facility the standard requirement for all reimbursement claims under UAE-based and international expat health plans including NOW Health International and Allianz Worldwide Care. We provide all required documentation in the format these insurers specify.
Because both plans are typically strong on allied health benefits, Downtown families are often pleasantly surprised at how much they can recover. Call us and we will walk through your specific plan with you.
Q: My child is bilingual — Arabic and English. Does Esperanza provide bilingual therapy?
Yes. Dubai’s multilingual environment is something we build into our therapy approach as a matter of course. Our therapists are experienced in supporting children across Arabic, English, and other languages, and we take into account the specific dynamics of bilingual language development which are clinically distinct from monolingual delay.
Condition-Specific FAQ: What Parents Most Often Ask
Speech Delay & Language Disorders
Q: At what age should I be concerned about my child’s speech?
General milestones: by 12 months, a child should have a few words; by 18 months, around 20 words; by 24 months, 2-word combinations; by 3 years, short sentences understood by strangers. If your child is not meeting these markers or if you simply have a feeling something is off — do not wait for the next GP check. Book a free consultation. Early action is always better than watchful waiting.
Q: Is speech delay always a sign of autism?
No. Speech delay has many causes including hearing loss, late talking (without other concerns), bilingual language exposure, or specific language impairment and the majority of children with speech delays do not have autism. A formal assessment by a speech-language pathologist is the only way to identify the underlying cause accurately and plan appropriate support.
Autism (ASD)
Q: Which insurance plans in Dubai cover ABA and speech therapy for autism?
Coverage for ASD-related therapy varies significantly. The best coverage tends to come from: Daman Enhanced plans, Thiqa (for UAE nationals), Bupa Global/Corporate, Cigna International, Allianz Worldwide Care, and Aetna International. Basic and Essential Benefits Plans typically exclude or severely limit ASD support.
Esperanza’s team can advise on your specific plan during your free consultation. We support children with ASD through speech therapy, occupational therapy, social skills programmes, and early intervention all of which may be partially claimable depending on your plan.
ADHD
Q: Can occupational therapy help a child with ADHD?
Yes, significantly. Occupational therapists work with children with ADHD on sensory regulation, attention strategies, fine motor skills, handwriting, and the practical daily-living skills that ADHD can disrupt. Many families find OT complements any medical management their child receives.
Learn more about Occupational Therapy at Esperanza.
Stuttering & Fluency
Q: My child has started stuttering. Should I be worried, and is therapy covered?
Stuttering (also called stammering) is relatively common in children aged 2–5 as language develops rapidly. In many cases it resolves naturally, but if it persists beyond 6 months, increases in frequency, or causes visible distress or avoidance, assessment is recommended.
Stuttering therapy is classified as a clinical speech intervention not educational and is generally covered under rehabilitation or allied health benefits when delivered by a DHA-licensed SLP with appropriate documentation.
Feeding & Swallowing
Q: Our toddler has feeding difficulties. Is that a speech therapy issue?
Yes. Feeding and swallowing disorders (dysphagia) fall within the scope of speech-language pathology because both feeding and speech share the same oral motor structures. Esperanza provides feeding therapy for children who struggle with texture progression, oral aversion, or swallowing safety.
Feeding therapy is often covered under rehabilitation benefits when a paediatric referral documents the clinical concern. A formal assessment is the first step.
Process FAQ: What to Expect at Esperanza

Q: Can parents attend sessions?
Yes and we actively encourage it. At Esperanza, parents are welcomed to sit in on every session. This is not just a courtesy; it is part of how therapy works. Parents who observe sessions understand the techniques being used and can practise them at home, which dramatically accelerates progress.
Q: How long before we see results from speech therapy?
This varies with the child’s age, the nature and severity of the communication challenge, session frequency, and how consistently home practice is applied. Many families notice meaningful progress within 8–12 sessions for mild-to-moderate concerns. More complex needs such as significant language delay or ASD-related communication differences typically require a longer programme.
At Esperanza, therapists set clear, measurable goals and review progress at regular intervals so families always know where their child stands.
Q: Do you provide home programmes between sessions?
Yes, every time. Home programmes are a core part of our therapy model not an optional add-on. After each session, your child’s therapist will explain and demonstrate activities for you to practise at home. Consistent daily practice between sessions is one of the strongest predictors of progress speed.
Q: What languages are sessions delivered in?
Sessions are delivered primarily in English, with Arabic support available. Our team is experienced working with families from across the UAE, South Asia, Europe, and the wider expat community, and we tailor our approach to each child’s dominant language and home language environment.
“Insurance shouldn’t stand between your child and progress. Our team is here to help you navigate every step — including the paperwork.” — The Esperanza Team, Al Karama, Dubai
